Speech, Language & Communication Development

This is only a very brief summary on the development of skills which are known to be critical to school success.

By the time they enter primary school the majority of children are able to:

Say most sounds correctly and make themselves understood to others
Show that they have some of the essential foundation skills to be able to sound out letters and words
Pay attention and listen in groups
Understand stories and follow directions in class
Learn new concepts and vocabulary with ease
Use correct grammar in sentences that contain lots of ideas
Link their ideas in an understandable sequence
Answer questions and solve problems in class
Make friends on the playground
Adapt their style of communicating to different people
Take turns in conversations
Explain something by sticking to the topic
Tell others about what’s going on in their lives
Over time, skills in
 

- SPEECH (producing sounds)
- LANGUAGE (comprehension and expression) and
- COMMUNICATION (using language appropriately)

continue to develop and become more refined as children face up to the everyday challenges of life at school and at home.
